Derbyshire v Gloucestershire at Derby on 25 to 28 May: LV= County Championship: Division Two
By John Brown
Heavy overnight rain delayed the start of this championship match, but conditions improved enough for play to begin at 1.45pm on the first day. Gloucestershire won the toss and chose to field first and they were rewarded with a wicket in the second over.
Paul Borrington and Wayne Madsen then battled hard on a slow pitch to take Derbyshire to tea at 74 for one. In only three overs after the interval, however, both Borrington and Madsen had gone, Borrington to an unfortunate run out after he was sent back late while considering a third run. The battle for survival continued, but wickets fell regularly to reduce Derbyshire to 153 for six.
Scott Elstone, playing only his second first-class match, looked more assured than most and he was still there at the close with Derbyshire on 166 for six.
Elstone had been joined by David Wainwright and on the second morning this pair played very well together to take their partnership to seventy from twenty-seven overs before Elstone fell lbw after scoring his maiden first-class fifty from 122 balls.
Wainwright reached his own fifty from 104 balls, and the last three Derbyshire batsmen helped him to add a further 55 to take the final total to 278. This left 59 overs to be bowled in the day, but after only eight of them had been bowled, more rain fell and play was eventually abandoned for the day with Gloucestershire on 21 without loss.
There was hope that play would start on time on the third morning, but the rain returned and there could be no play until 4.10pm when there was time for 38 overs to be bowled. Although the rain had stopped, the light was poor and three times the umpires took the players off the field: as a result only 17.5 overs were bowled, during which time Derbyshire managed to capture four wickets and thus earn themselves a bowling bonus point.
On the fourth day a great deal of rain had fallen overnight and it was little surprise when the umpires decided that no play would be possible. 250 overs had been lost during the whole match so both teams had to be content with eight points apiece.
Derbyshire 278 (106 overs) (SL Elstone 63, DJ Wainwright 54*, PM Borrington 42, WL Madsen 33; WRS Gidman 4 for 50, BAC Howell 4 for 60)
Gloucestershire 66 for 4 (25.5 overs) (WA Tavare 22; MHA Footitt 2 for 28)
Derbyshire (8 points) drew with Gloucestershire (8)
