Match Reports

Derbyshire v Yorkshire at Derby on 18 June: FLt20: North Division

By John Brown

Yorkshire were the visitors for Derbyshire’s third twenty-over match of the season, and they won the toss and chose to bat in this floodlit televised match.

They started briskly with 36 runs coming from the first four overs before Dan Redfern took a well-judged running catch on the mid-wicket boundary to dismiss Jaques.

Gale and Root kept the score moving for Yorkshire, but the introduction of David Wainwright slowed their progress considerably. He took two wickets in his first over and conceded only fourteen runs in his allocation of four overs, a remarkably economic spell in this form of the game.

After 17.2 overs Yorkshire had reached only 110 for five, and Derbyshire seemed to have achieved a position from which they might reasonably expect to win. From the remaining sixteen balls, however, Yorkshire cut loose with Gary Ballance again proving their chief aggressor. Ballance faced ten of those balls and hit three sixes and two fours as he hit another twenty-eight of the forty runs which his team added.

If, from the first ball of the nineteenth over, an underarm throw at the stumps by Mark Turner had hit with Ballance stranded out of his ground Yorkshire might well have finished with a much lower score than their final 150.

Even so, Derbyshire seemed to have made a promising start as Wes Durston and Usman Khawaja opened with a stand of 43 before the first wicket fell.

Thereafter Derbyshire’s batsmen followed too quickly, although Redfern was unlucky to be run out from a bowler deflection, and the required rate soon became more could be reasonably expected.

Moin Ashraf bowled straight at pace and finished with four wickets for 18 in his four overs. Derbyshire were bowled out for 109 and thus lost by 41 runs.

This result places Derbyshire in third position in the six-strong North division at this early stage in the competition. Ballance was named as Man of the Match, thus leaving Derbyshire again to rue the fact that they had been unable to retain his services a few years earlier.

Yorkshire 150 for 5 (20 overs) (GS Ballance 47*, AW Gale 39, JE Root 36; DJ Wainwright 2 for 14)
Derbyshire 109 (20 overs) (WJ Durston 21, UT Khawaja 20; MA Ashraif 4 for 14, RM Pyrah 3 for 21, MA Starc 2 for 16)

Yorkshire (2 points) beat Derbyshire (0) by 41 runs
