Derbyshire v Surrey at Derby on 29th May: Yorkshire Bank 40 League: Group B
By John Brown
Derbyshire played their third 40-over match in four days when they hosted this floodlit televised match with Surrey. With rain in the air the start was delayed by more than three hours with the match reduced to nineteen overs per side.
Wayne Madsen won his second toss of the season and invited Surrey to bat first. Steven Davies and Jason Roy took an instant liking to the bowling and scored at comfortably over ten runs an over.
Surrey had reached fifty after 4.2 overs and both their openers continued to score freely until Davies - from 22 balls - was very well caught by Madsen running back at deep extra cover. There was just time for Surrey to bring up their hundred before the rain started to fall again.
The rain persisted beyond nine o’clock, but it relented enough for the umpires to allow the match to be completed over ten overs a side. This would have meant that Surrey would have had one more over’s batting before Derbyshire had their turn. Using the Duckworth Lewis method Derbyshire would have had an adjusted target, probably about ten more runs than Surrey had scored from their ten overs.
But the rain returned before the match could be resumed as No Result was possible at the County Ground with both teams taking one point.
Surrey 100 for 1 (9 overs) (SM Davies 50, JJ Roy 42*)
Derbyshire did not bat
No result: Derbyshire 1 point; Surrey 1
