Second XI Championship - Derbyshire v Glamorgan, July 30th, 31st and August 1st 2013
Five wickets on the final day from Wes Durston helped Derbyshire Seconds claim a thrilling 10-run victory against Glamorgan at the County Ground – moving Stephen Stubbings’ side top of the Second XI Championship table.
Captain Paul Borrington won the toss and elected to bat first on a pitch that was expected to help the spin bowlers as the game progressed.
The hosts received good contributions from Borrington (29) and Durston (33), before an outstanding 118-run stand between Dan Redfern (44) and Scott Elstone (61) helped Derbyshire on their way to a competitive total at 221-5 in the 60th over.
Three quick wickets fell in quick succession to reduce the hosts to 275-8, however, some lusty hitting from Tom Knight – who ended unbeaten on 54 – and Jonathan Marsden (26 off 27 balls) held a 56-run stand for the ninth wicket to allow Derbyshire to retire on 331-9 in the 99th over.
Glamorgan safely navigated the last four overs without incident, closing Day One on eight without loss.
The second day was lost due to steady rain and on resuming play on the third day, the two Captains agreed to Glamorgan declaring their first innings, so that Derbyshire could forfeit their second innings to set the visitors 324 to win in a full day’s play of 96 overs.
Glamorgan opened with a Partnership of 37, but Jonathan Marsden (2-47) dismissed both openers before Tom Taylor (1-24) and Alasdair Evans (1-41) claimed a wicket apiece to leave the visitors struggling on 79-4.
However, good contributions from Lloyd (50), Smith (51), Salter (68) and Knight (32), lifted the Score to 290-6, leaving Glamorgan needing only 34 more runs to win in nine overs.
At this point, Durston returned to the attack and immediately has Salter caught on the boundary by Ben Cotton. Knight immediately followed, caught against by Cotton, before the spinner cleaned up the final two wickets – to end with figures of 5-56 off 22 overs – to seal a dramatic 10-run win.
A good all-round performance with both bat and ball handed Derbyshire their third victory in a row which lifts the team to the top of the Second XI Championship table.
