Academy Players

Cricket Derbyshire Academy in partnership with the University of Derby

ACADEMY OBJECTIVES

Established in September 2003, the Cricket Derbyshire Academy in partnership with the University of Derby gives talented young cricketers an unparalleled opportunity to benefit from professional cricket training and education whilst still at school or college.

The Academy aims to make the club self-sufficient in terms of bringing through our own home-grown players and preparing them for a future in the professional game.

WHAT HAPPENS AT THE ACADEMY?

The Academy training season takes place during the winter months; commencing in early November through to April. Each week the Academy players attend sessions to develop their skills through group and individual work.

The Academy syllabus incorporates classroom based tuition including cricket knowledge, the principles of strength & conditioning, nutrition, sports psychology and performance lifestyle training alongside the practical coaching sessions; fielding and in the nets.

ONGOING SUPPORT

Year-round support includes ongoing visits from the Sports Psychologist and Personal Development & Welfare Staff during the summer months.

During the cricket season the Academy play around 20 days of cricket as an Academy side. They attend occasional practice sessions and individual sessions are always available.

CRICKET DERBYSHIRE ACADEMY INTAKE 2015

The Cricket Derbyshire Academy – in partnership with the University of Derby has announced its intake of ten young cricketers for 2015.

The group includes six returning Academy Members and four new recruits who will have the opportunity to work closely with Academy Director AJ Harris, his assistant Stephen Stubbings and the remainder of the club’s professional coaching staff.

Stubbings and Harris played 419 first-class matches between them during their own distinguished playing careers.

The selected players will spend the winter working on their skills and taking lifestyle advice before embarking together on a summer of competitive cricket.

Graduates Tom Taylor, Ben Cotton, Harvey Hosein and Greg Cork all made first-team debuts during the 2014 season.

With Ben Slater, Alex Hughes and Tom Knight, seven Cricket Derbyshire Academy - in partnership with University of Derby - graduates in total featured for Graeme Welch’s side during the summer. Fellow graduate Tom Poynton recently returned to training after missing the 2014 campaign through injury.

The Club has also announced that Academy graduates Will Davis, Adam Wheatcroft and Harry White have been awarded summer contracts for 2015, providing the opportunity for them to show what they can do whilst learning from exposure to the professional environment.

The continuing partnership with the University of Derby, including the sponsorship of the county’s LV= County Championship shirt, will see Cricket Derbyshire once again support the University of Derby’s Team Derby cricket team as part of the first University/Academy cricket partnership in the country.

Academy Director, AJ Harris said: “We’ve seen this year Academy graduates breaking into the first team and performing impressively. This is something we want to replicate again-and-again.

“The 2015 Academy intake will now get the chance to train in an elite environment under our specialist coaching staff throughout the winter and into the summer.

“We will make sure the players know what is required at first-class level so their transition through to the senior side can be smooth.

“We’re very lucky to have such a committed and experienced coaching team, which includes contracted hours from members of the professional squad.”
