Match Report: Nottinghamshire v Derbyshire

Nottinghamshire v Derbyshire at Trent Bridge on 12th to 15th June: LV= County Championship: Division 1

Derbyshire lost the toss and were asked to bat first at the start of a match which proved to be badly affected by rain interruptions.

Billy Godleman and Chesney Hughes started well with an opening stand of 89 before Hughes was caught at mid-off from a mis-timed pull after he had made a good 59 from 83 balls. When Godleman followed the score had reached 100 for two, whereupon Shivnarine Chanderpaul joined his captain, Wayne Madsen, and they stayed together until bad light and rain stopped play at 4.40pm with the score on 245 for two.  

There was another short stoppage after only three balls on the second morning, and, when they resumed, after sixteen more overs of play, there was a longer interruption, but in that time Derbyshire lost four more wickets including both of those who had batted so well in adding 165 for the third wicket. Madsen had made a typically stubborn and determined 74 (146 balls), while Chanderpaul was unlucky to have seen the ball spin back onto his stumps from a defensive shot after he had made a fluent, yet unobtrusive, 87 from 118 balls.  

291 for six was disappointing after the more than solid start, but Richard Johnson and David Wainwright stayed until the close – 306 for six – and then stopped the slide with a slow, but important stand of forty in seventeen overs.

2nd XI Match Report: Derbyshire v Nottinghamshire

2nd XI Championship - Nottinghamshire v Derbyshire, June 12th, 13th and 14th 2013

Derbyshire Second XI’s Championship fixture against Nottinghamshire ended in a draw after persistent rain washed out the final day at Denby.

In a low-scoring match, the hosts secured a 21-run lead after their first innings thanks to 34 from Dan Redfern and 35 from Paul Borrington. But heavy rain on Day 3 meant that no result was possible, as Nottinghamshire ended on 131-5, a lead of 110 runs before play was abandoned.

After winning the toss, Derbyshire elected to bowl first and enjoyed plenty of success on the opening morning claiming regular wickets - including that of the experienced Alex Hales as he was caught behind by Tom Poynton off Matt Higginbottom (2-39) without scoring.

Nottinghamshire were reduced to 37-3 and then 61-5, with Tony Palladino – making a return from injury – finishing with innings-best figures of 3-30 from his 14 overs.

Academy graduate Ben Cotton also claimed three wickets, while Tom Knight produced an impressive spell of bowling to end with figures of 2-10 from his nine overs, as the visitors were dismissed for 144.

2nd XI One-Day Report: Nottinghamshire v Derbyshire

2nd XI One-Day Trophy - Nottinghamshire v Derbyshire, June 11th 2013

Derbyshire Second XI were beaten by five wickets in their one-day Trophy fixture against Nottinghamshire at Trent College.  

Ben Slater top-scored for Derbyshire - but a brisk 77 from Riki Wessels guided Nottinghamshire to their 219 victory target with two overs to spare.

Derbyshire won the toss and elected to bat first, but they lost regular wickets during the opening stages with Billy Godleman (15) and Tom Poynton (11) both falling after getting starts.

But opener Slater continued his fine form finally falling for an excellent 69 - and he was helped with timely contributions from Dan Redfern (34) and Paul Borrington (32) as Derbyshire posted 218-9 from their 40 overs.

Stephen Stubbings’ side made a solid start after the restart, as Matt Higginbottom (1-40) claimed an early wicket to reduce Nottinghamshire to 5-1 after the opening over.

But the experienced Wessels soon took the game away from Derbyshire hitting a quick-fire 77 from just 58 balls. Tom Knight claimed two wickets, to end with figures of 2-24 from his eight overs, but an unbeaten half century from Adam Tilcock helped Nottinghamshire to their victory target with just 12 balls remaining.  
 

Match Report: YB40: Derbyshire v Essex

Derbyshire v Essex at Leek on 9^th June: Yorkshire Bank 40: Group B

On a beautiful sunny afternoon at Leek, Derbyshire were pleased to play host to group table-toppers Essex. The visitors won the toss and invited Derbyshire to bat first on what looked to be a batsman-friendly pitch.  

Chesney Hughes set Derbyshire on their way with three fours from the first three balls of the match.  He was out in the third over, however, but his partner, Wes Durston, was in fine aggressive form, and he reached his fifty from only 34 balls. He hit all the Essex bowlers to various parts of the ground so, when he was bowled in the fourteenth over, he had hit seven fours and five sixes in his 46-ball innings for 71.

Durston was well supported by Paul Borrington, and they provided just the platform from which Shivnarine Chanderpaul is so adept at taking advantage. Taking a series of singles at first, Chanderpaul timed his innings to perfection while Wayne Madsen, Richard Johnson and Alex Hughes took more chances at the other end.

Chanderpaul and Hughes made good use of their four powerplay overs as they scored 49 runs in that short time, as they finished with an unbroken partnership of 102 from just ten overs - helping Derbyshire to record their highest-ever League List A score of 321 for five.

Match Report: Derbyshire v Durham MCCU

Derbyshire v Durham MCCU at Derby on 5^th , 6th and 7^th June: Non First-Class match

Derbyshire picked only three of the team which had played in the recent championship match with Surrey for this game. One of these was Wes Durston who captained Derbyshire – he lost the toss, but Derbyshire were asked to bat first on a mainly grey day.

Billy Godleman (45 balls) was unusually free-scoring and, together with Paul Borrington, set Derbyshire on their way to a large total. They were both out in quick succession – 72 for 2 – before Ben Slater, newly-promoted from the Second eleven, and Durston added 198 in forty-five overs before Durston retired, having faced 132 balls for his 117 (15 fours; 1 six). Slater was more circumspect but he too followed Durston to a century before retiring at the tea interval for 116 (206 balls; 12 fours).

Alex Hughes made an enterprising 73 (83 balls) to put Derbyshire in the comfortable position of being able to declare and leave the students forty-five minutes batting before the close.   Durham lost three wickets that evening and continued to lose more on the second morning, with Alasdair Evans looking especially awkward to face. When Durham reached 69 for seven, the game looked to be heading for an early finish – perhaps Derbyshire relaxed a bit, but the Durham tail provided more resistance than anyone expected.

2nd XI One-Day Report: Derbyshire v Lancashire

2nd XI One-Day Trophy - Derbyshire v Lancashire, June 3rd 2013

Derbyshire Second XI suffered a seven-wicket defeat in their one-day Trophy fixture with Lancashire at Glossop Cricket Club.

After losing the toss, Derbyshire produced a good batting display to post 235 on a slow wicket that contained plenty of moisture, with Tom Poynton top scoring with 63 from just 28 balls.

Stephen Stubbings' side hit some powerful shots in the final overs, going at ten an over for the last ten overs to post a competitive total in their third one-day Trophy fixture of the season.

But unfortunately the above par total wasn't enough and as the sun dried and flattened the wicket - helping Lancashire who got their innings off to a flyer, moving onto 56-0 after the opening seven overs. 

Derbyshire fought back through the middle overs and begun to claw the momentum back a bit, but in the end the hosts had enough batting to reach the total with just two overs to spare. 

Match Report: Derbyshire v Surrey

Derbyshire v Surrey at Derby on 30th May to 2nd June: LV= County Championship: Division 1

Following heavy overnight rain, play was delayed until 3.15pm on the first day, but thereafter the weather was dry, with almost continuous sunshine on the last three days so the match could continue until after 5pm on the fourth day.

Wayne Madsen won his third toss of the week and then surprised many people by choosing to bat first. Even though Derbyshire lost their openers early, Madsen showed that his decision had been the right one as he and Shivnarine Chanderpaul batted through until the close of play, by which time they had added 203 runs together, remarkably the first time a Derbyshire pair had produced a double-century partnership in 143 matches with Surrey.

This pair continued on the second day until they had added 265 together. Chanderpaul, despite suffering with a heavy cold, had batted beautifully as he timed a succession of drives, straight or through the covers, before he was caught in the gully for 129 from 189 balls. Madsen also reached his hundred and went on to score 152 from 259 balls - yet another good captain’s knock.  

Three wickets fell quickly to put Derbyshire on 336 for 6, so it needed some strong resistance from Richard Johnson, playing only his second match of the season, and David Wainwright, who added a vital 59 between them. The 37 runs which Mark Footitt helped Johnson to add for the last wicket also helped Derbyshire to a position from which they could look forward with greater confidence. Johnson was last out for 72, thus equalling his career-best score. Chris Tremlett finished the innings with his fifth wicket, coincidentally his 400^th in first-class cricket.

2nd XI Match Report: Yorkshire v Derbyshire

2nd XI Championship - Yorkshire v Derbyshire, 29th, 30th and 31st May 2013

Derbyshire Second XI withstood a late Yorkshire fightback to hold on for a hard-fought draw against the White Rose county at Stamford Bridge, York.

In a rain-affected Championship fixture, Stephen Stubbings’ side bowled the hosts out on the final day, leaving Derbyshire a session and a half to chase 210 for victory. The visitors, however, lost regular wickets to end the day on 137-9 – holding on for a respectable draw on an entertaining Day 3.

Persistent rain ruled out most of Day 1, but when play did finally begin, Derbyshire claimed three early wickets courtesy of Alasdair Evans (1-17), Matt Higginbottom and Harding (1-47).

No play was possible on the second day – and when play resumed on the final morning the hosts moved comfortable onto 173-3 at lunch.
