Academy back to winning ways at the Park
The Cricket Derbyshire Academy, sponsored by the University of Derby, came out on top in their latest Premier Challenge game against Lullington Park on Sunday.
After an additional and intense fielding session as part of the pre-match warm-up, captain Ben Cotton lost the toss and the Academy were invited to bat first.
Although Mykylo Bird was given out LBW early on, Tom Hamilton and Michael Mitchell added 79 for the second wicket, with both players running well and putting away the bad ball.
When Mitchell fell to an athletic catch, Rahib Ali joined Hamilton and they put on 115 for the third wicket before Ali was out for a fluent 46.
Hamilton completed an excellent hundred soon after and at the end of 50 overs the Academy had reached 259 for 6, which was always likely to be a very competitive score. Paul Dawson was the pick of the Lullington bowlers with 2 for 43 off 10 overs.
In response, the Lullington Park innings started poorly with both openers back in the pavilion after a good opening spell from Cotton and Jonathan Marsden.
Australian Martin Walters was joined by Richard Green and together they took the score to 70 before Tom Taylor bowled Green for 18. Jono Clare and Harry Killoran, extracting lots of turn from the pitch and bowling intelligently, shared six wickets between them as they ensured that there was no way back for Lullington's middle order.
Rob Hemmings took the last wicket to leave Lullington all out for 176, giving the Academy victory by 83 runs.
