2nd XI Championship - Worcestershire v Derbyshire, 14th, 15th, 16th May 2013
Derbyshire Second XI claimed a comfortable 192-run victory in their Championship fixture against Worcestershire at Kidderminster this week.
In a rain affected match, Derbyshire won the toss and elected the bat first and the opening pair of Ben Slater and Paul Borrington didn’t disappoint putting on 150 for the first wicket.
The duo batted beautifully over the two day, after most of Day 1 was washed-out, before Slater finally fell for an excellent 78, which included 11 fours. His opening partner would be dismissed soon after for a magnificent 76, with 13 fours, as Derbyshire moved onto 185-2 at Tea on Day 2.
The visitors continued their batting onslaught, with AJ Norman adding 38 and Tom Knight with a quick-fire 34 from 24 balls, and were finally dismissed for a superb 320 on the morning of Day 3. Both teams agreed to forfeit an innings to try and force a result, so Worcestershire needed 321 runs to win on the final day.
But the Derbyshire bowlers quickly got on top of the hosts’ batsman reducing the home side to 28-3 after 16 overs, as Matt Higginbottom, C. Griggs and C. Harding all claimed a wicket apiece.
And it would get even better for the visitors as Harding claimed two quick wickets, taking his tally to three, as Worcestershire were reduced to 42-5.
The wickets continued to tumble at Kidderminster as Higginbottom bagged two more in quick succession, to finish with superb figures of 3-40 from 15 overs, as the hosts slumped to 47-7.
Derbyshire were firmly in control and Harding soon claimed his fourth wickets, to finish with match best figures of 4-27 from nine overs.
And AJ Norman (2-24) claimed the final two overs as Worcestershire were dismissed for 128 in 53.1 overs, as Stephen Stubbings’ side secured a convincing 193-run victory at Kidderminster.
