2nd XI Championship - Warwickshire v Derbyshire, July 24th, 25th and 26th 2013
A century from Paul Borrington – and a five-wicket haul from trialist Nathan Waller – handed the Second XI victory against Warwickshire in their three-day fixture.
After being asked to bat first, Ben Slater (33) and Borrington (27) put on 65 runs for the opening wicket at Knowle and Dorridge Cricket Club. But the visitors lost a succession of wickets after the lunch interval to be reduced to 139-9 after 46 overs on Day 1. A last-wicket stand, however, between Harvey Hosein (28 not out) and Ben Cotton (19) lifted Stephen Stubbings’ side up to 191 all out in 63 overs.
Warwickshire’s first innings followed a similar pattern as Derbyshire, as openers Best (34) and Ian Westwood (37) added 70 for the first wicket, before the hosts collapsed to 167-9 in the 56th over. Jonathan Clare picked up two wickets, but it was Zimbabwe-born trialist Waller who returned the stand out figures of 5-31 from his 15 overs to dismiss the hosts for 213 – a lead of 22 runs.
Derbyshire enjoyed an improved batting display in their second innings – and it was 25-year-old Borrington who led the way with a magnificent 107, including 14 fours, that set the visitors up for victory.
Borrington was ably assisted by Billy Godleman (36), Scott Elstone (39 not out), Clare (42 not out) and an unbeaten 68 from Alex Hughes, who retired to join up with the first team, as Derbyshire declared on 333-3 in 87 overs, setting Warwickshire 312 for victory in 82 overs.
The hosts had another impressive opening stand adding 64 runs, but then wickets began to fall at fairly regular intervals. Alasdair Evans (2-22) and Tom Taylor (2-30) both picked up two wickets apiece, while David Wainwright (3-48) finished with three wickets to help dismiss Warwickshire for 260 in 72 overs.
It was an excellent victory over a fairly strong Warwickshire side and the 21 Points gained took Derbyshire into third position in the league table.
