Second XI Friendly - Derbyshire v Northamptonshire, July 8th, 9th, 10th and 11th 2013
Centuries from Peter Burgoyne and Ben Slater helped Derbyshire Second XI claim a convincing 232-run victory against Northamptonshire in their four-day friendly at the County Ground.
After winning the toss, Derbyshire posted 269 in their first innings after they received healthy contributions from Scott Elstone (82) and Burgoyne (72). Tom Taylor’s economical figures of 4 for 19 from his 13 overs, and 3 for 37 from Greg Cork, ensured that the hosts secured a nine-run lead after the two first innings.
The game was ultimately won in the second innings thanks to a mammoth fourth wicket partnership worth 293 runs between Slater and Burgoyne. Slater hit 18 fours and a six in his season-high unbeaten 153, while Burgoyne smashed 16 fours and five sixes in his 150 off 194 balls. This allowed Captain Paul Borrington to declare on 407-4, setting Northants 417 for victory in 108 overs.
The visitors’ second innings, however, only lasted 63 overs as a superb Derbyshire performance in the field helped restrict James Kettleborough’s side to just 184. Cal Harding (2 for 39 in 11 overs) and Jonathan Marsden (2 for 29 in 14 overs) both picked up two wickets apiece, while Burgoyne finished a fine all-round performance returning figures of 3 for 13 from his 12 overs – handing Stephen Stubbings’ side a 232-run win.
