Old Speckled Hen Chesterfield Festival of Cricket 2014

ChesterfieldDerbyshire County Cricket Club brought first-class cricket back to Chesterfield in 2014, as Queen’s Park played host to the Old Speckled Hen Chesterfield Festival of Cricket for the eighth successive summer.

At the height of the English summer in July, the county’s picturesque northern outpost hosted six-days of county cricket as part of the week-long cricket festival, in association with Chesterfield Borough Council, starting Sunday 6th July.

Derbyshire competed in two NatWest T20 Blast fixtures – including the traditional local derby with Yorkshire Vikings on Sunday 13 July – as well as the four-day clash with LV= County Championship Division Two rivals Essex.

On the opening day, Sunday 6 July, Leicestershire Foxes were the visitors to Queen's Park and took home the spoils, having secured a five-wicket win. Derbyshire all-rounder Wes Durston top-scored with 89 but Anthony Ireland took five wickets to guide his side to victory.

Graeme Welch’s side then took on Essex in the LV= County Championship the following day. After four days of excellent cricket, the two teams had to settle for a draw, both taking home 10 points. Shivnarine Chanderpaul and Wayne Madsen both scored nineties for Derbyshire, whereas Nick Browne achieved centuries in both innings for the visitors.

The festival concluded on Sunday 13th July with its highlight fixture as the Yorkshire Vikings once again made the short trip to Chesterfield for the eagerly-anticipated NatWest T20 Blast match. Over 4,000 supporters were in attendance as Yorkshire came out on top by 59 runs.

Derbyshire will once again return to Queen's Park next season for the 2015 Chesterfield Festival of Cricket.
