Derbyshire’s Jonathan Clare is aiming to develop into the “perfect all-rounder” this summer.
The Burnley-born seamer enjoyed his finest season to date in 2011, contributing 43 wickets and 688 runs to a side that finished fifth in Division Two of the LV= County Championship.
Having overcome a career-threatening shoulder injury that limited his progress prior to the last campaign, Clare is confident he can continue to improve and admits the challenge of bringing his first-class bowling average - which currently stands at 28.28 - beneath his batting average of 27.97 is a useful source of motivation.
“They say to be the perfect all-rounder your bowling average has got to be lower than your batting average, and my batting average is just lower than my bowling average,” the 25-year-old explained to ecb.co.uk.
