[VIDEO] Hughes stars but Hampshire claim win at Derby

ChesneyHughesChesney Hughes struck an explosive 74 – but Hampshire Royals defeated the Derbyshire Falcons by 41 runs at the County Ground, Derby.

Royals’ Captain Jimmy Adams led the way hitting 64, but two wickets apiece from David Wainwright (2-33), Alasdair Evans (2-38) and Alex Hughes (2-33) help restrict the visitors to 219-7.

The Falcons made a solid start in reply courtesy of Chesney Hughes - who struck five fours and two sixes in his 79-ball innings - but the hosts lost a flurry of wickets to be dismissed for 178 in 35.5 overs.

After a flying start thanks to Michael Carberry (20) and James Vince (40), Hampshire Captain Adams led by example striking four fours to top score with 64 off 78 balls. Derbyshire, however, fought back in the middle overs with some disciplined bowling.

Wainwright was the pick of the bowlers returning figures of 2-33 off his eight overs, while Alex Hughes (2-33) and Evans (2-38) bowled superbly at the death to restrict the visitors to just 70 runs off the final 10 overs.

Dimi Mascarenhas - competing in his final fixture at the County Ground - added some valuable runs during the final over, striking 24 off just 17 balls, before he fell in the final over to a smart catch from Wes Durston at mid-off off Evans - as Hampshire posted 219-7 from their allotted over.

After the early loss of Durston (4), Chesney Hughes and Paul Borrington shared a 60-run stand to put the Falcons in the ascendency as they approached the halfway point.

The stand was finally broken when Borrington was dismissed for 25 off 33 balls - and the hosts were soon in trouble as they slumped from 122-2 to 128-5.

Chesney Hughes hit three fours and two sixes to complete a fine half century off just 57 balls, but the hard-hitting opener fell shortly after top score with 74.

Billy Godleman (11) and Richard Johnson (4) - who was superbly ran out by a direct hit from Mascarenhas - then fell in following two overs. David Wainwright counter-attacked with a brisk 23 off just 20 balls, but the hosts continued to lose regular wickets to be dismissed for 178 in the 36th over.
