Sidebottom the difference in pre-season Twenty20 defeat

Ryan SidebottomDerbyshire’s top-order was blown away by Ryan Sidebottom as Yorkshire took the pre-season Twenty20 spoils at the Kensington Oval today.

The Falcons will contest the Plate competition in the second round of Twenty20 matches on Thursday after Carnegie inflicted a 60-run defeat.

Set a daunting 184 to win, the Falcons were unable to repel an outstanding performance from an inspired Sidebottom as the former England international helped himself to 3 for 13 from two overs with the new ball.

Wes Durston (2) was first to go, nicking behind with the score on nine. Jonathan Clare (4) and Chesney Hughes (13) were mopped-up by a brace of brilliant Yorkers and – at 34-3 after just four overs of their innings, the Falcons were in dire straits.

Captain Wayne Madsen (pictured right) withstood the early barrage and played well for his 41 off 34 balls with four fours and a six.

But the remainder of the batting was badly subdued against the spin of Adil Rashid (3 for 20) and Azim Rafiq (1 for 21) as the Yorkshire duo produced combined figures of 4 for 41 from eight overs.

Garry Park scored 19 and Paul Borrington managed a classy 27 from 18 balls, with four fours, in the latter overs.

But, by shattering the stumps of David Wainwright to finish with figures of 4 for 20 from four overs, it was fitting that Sidebottom had the final say.

Yorkshire earlier won the toss and elected to bat. And it was a good job Mark Footitt (pictured below) pulled a yorker out of the bag to dismiss Jonny Bairstow with the England wicketkeeper beginning to look ominous reaching 48 from 30 balls.

Footitt went on to complete figures of 3 for 36 from three overs; expensive perhaps but he bowled with promising pace and aggression at the middle and end of the Yorkshire innings.

Bairstow had been the star turn of the Yorkshire innings – and Carnegie also benefited from a solid platform laid by Andrew Gale who scored 44 from 36 deliveries at the top of the order.

Wes Durston (3-0-17-0) opening the bowling was a success. But with cameo roles played by Sayers (19), Lyth (20), Ballance (18) and Root (15), Yorkshire plundered their way to a sizeable target despite two wickets in the final over for Ross Whiteley.
