Durston and Whiteley put Barbados XI to the sword

Wes DurstonA fine all-round performance from Wes Durston has fired Derbyshire to an emphatic Twenty20 victory over Barbados XI.

The Falcons will play Hampshire Royals in the Plate Final at the Kensington Oval later today after Durston’s 93 at the top of the order - and two wickets for 17 with the new ball - helped ensure a 98-run win.

Winning the toss allowed Derbyshire the opportunity of setting a target for the first time in three matches so far on tour.

And this time the batting fired as the Falcons posted a huge total of 213-3 from their 20 overs.

Durston anchored the innings with an assured 93 off 62 balls, oozing control as he struck ten fours and three sixes without ever straying from natural cricket strokes.

But, after Chesney Hughes departed bowled by the leg-spin of Charles for 20, the arrival of Ross Whiteley (pictured below) brought a spree of extraordinary fireworks.

Ross WhiteleyThe platform had been set by the opening stand of 78 in 8.4 overs – and Whiteley was in no mood to let the home side off the hook.

The young all-rounder took just 20 balls to reach 50 and finished unbeaten on 75 having faced a total of 34 balls with five fours and six towering sixes.

The match was over as a contest within eight balls of the Barbados XI reply as the home side collapsed to 0-3.

Durston trapped danger-man Dwayne Smith lbw with the first ball of the innings, then put himself on a hat-trick as Joel Leacock carved the next ball down the throat of Ally Evans at point.

Evans then took a wicket with his second ball as Rashidi Boucher sliced to third-man, still without a run on the board, and the Scottish trialist also accounted for Larry Babb, who made 19, caught by Wainwright at long-leg later in his spell.

The locals then contributed to their own downfall with three comical run outs. And Jonathan Clare took a fine over-the-shoulder catch to dismiss Nurse, who had shown spirited resistance in his 33 off 25 balls, to hand Mark Footitt his solitary wicket in a four over spell of 1 for 17.

The home side closed their innings on 115-8.
