Bowlers impress as Derbyshire finish on a high

Ally EvansDerbyshire’s bowlers got the workout they needed – and faired considerably better than their opponents on the previous day – as the two day match versus Yorkshire concluded today.

Ally Evans (pictured above), Tom Knight, Ross Whiteley,Chesney Hughes and Wes Durston shared the wickets as Yorkshire accumulated 287-9 in reply to Derbyshire’s 359 for two wickets 24 hours earlier.

Although the wickets column was empty for Mark Footitt, Mark Turner and David Wainwright, all three also had reason to be pleased with their day’s work at North Stars Cricket Club.

A day of hard work in the baking sunshine was promised for the Derbyshire bowlers as Joe Root and Adam Lyth opened the batting for Yorkshire.

But Footitt (pictured below), the hero of the Twenty20 victory over Hampshire on Thursday, continued to impress with a hostile opening spell of 0-13 off six overs. Six of the 13 runs were in no-balls and a further six off the edge through third-man.

Mark FootittAfter watching his opening partner toil without success, Evans’ 12th over breakthrough was somewhat fortuitous as, with the score on 48, Root (15) slapped a rank long-hop straight into the grateful hands of David Wainwright at midwicket.

Adam Lyth (33) nicked Whiteley (pictured below) behind with the score on 60 as the Derbyshire seamers kept up the pressure impressively.

Ross WhiteleyAnd Wainwright took his second catch, a good one reaching high over his head at mid-on, to dismiss Andrew Gale off Knight’s left-arm spin leaving Yorkshire 80-3 after 21.4 overs.

The afternoon session saw Derbyshire stalled by a partnership of 71 in 27.5 overs between Anthony McGrath and Alex Lees.

But the lid was kept on the runs impressively, especially by Wainwright (pictured below) who bowled a 12-over spell - with seven maidens - and conceded just 14 runs.

David WainwrightThe sight of Turner (pictured below) getting through a brace of four over spells, meanwhile, was particularly welcome as the fast-bowler’s rehabilitation from a lower-abdominal operation nears its completion.

Mark TurnerYoung wicketkeeper Chris Durham, understudy to Tom Poynton throughout the tour so far, took a routine catch to dismiss Lees for 39, handing Evans his second wicket at 151-4.

But McGrath, who reached 50 in 132 balls with 6 fours and a six, began to motor in the latter stages of the afternoon session.

Joined by Gerard Brophy (32), the pair added another 71 in 15.5 overs before McGrath was finally out caught, by Borrington, at point off Chesney Hughes (pictured below) having reached 88, in 172 balls, with 11 fours and two sixes.

Chesney HughesHughes then quickly accounted for Brophy, caught by Matt Lineker at slip for 32 and Durston trapped Ajmal Shahzad lbw playing back for 11 to leave Yorkshire 247-7 in the 72nd over.

Tom KnightAnd after Knight (pictured above), twice aided by the safe hands of Evans, accounted for Gurman Randhawan (7) and Steven Patterson (0) late in the day to finish with a three-wicket haul, it was another very satisfactory day for Derbyshire despite Azeem Rafiq's unbeaten 38.
