Ross Whiteley demonstrated his all-round expertise as Derbyshire tamed – but rarely dislodged – the Northamptonshire batsmen at The County Ground today.
The visitors closed on 241-7 in reply to the home side’s 286 with their Academy graduate left-armer adding two wickets to his first innings 83, leaving honours pretty even heading into the penultimate day (11am).
Alex Wakely and Niall O’Brien joint top-scored with 62 runs coming from 214 and 175 balls respectively as the scoring rate rarely topped two-an-over throughout an attritional day of LV= County Championship cricket.
David Sales hung around for 77 balls, scoring 15, before becoming Whiteley’s first victim of the day, caught in the slips by the previous day’s centurion Dan Redfern, leaving Northamptonshire 69-4 shortly before lunch.
A painstaking partnership of 81 followed as Wakely and O’Brien dropped anchor in order to repel the accuracy of the bowlers, only for their hard work to be undone as the all-important wickets fell, both lbw, to Wainwright and Whiteley respectively.
Mark Footitt claimed his first wicket of the season by trapping David Willey (7) in-front late in the day.
