Derbyshire beat Glamorgan to stay top; Day 3 highlights here

Derbyshire remain top of the LV=County Championship Division Two table after a clinical win over Glamorgan inside three days at The County Ground.

David Wainwright starred with the ball, taking 5-51 as Glamorgan set the hosts just 70 to win in the final session of the day; Derbyshire going on to win comprehensively by eight wickets.

Earlier, any thoughts of a declaration early or midway through the third day were soon taken out of Derbyshire’s hands as Glamorgan began the morning strongly.

After just three balls of the morning session, David Wainwright became the first man to go, edging to James Allenby at slip for 13.

A procession of wickets then followed, with Jon Clare (1), Tom Poynton (2), Tim Groenewald (6) and Mark Footitt (0) all falling in the first half hour as the hosts slumped from 335-5 to 355 all out; Madsen unbeaten on 130.

Although a disappointing end to the innings, Derbyshire passing 350 ensured a further batting point and meant that the visitors would begin their second innings facing a not unsubstantial deficit of 119 runs.

That deficit appeared all the more insurmountable at the start of the Glamorgan reply, a terrific spell of bowling from Tim Groenewald accounting first for Gareth Rees – lbw for five – and then  Nick James – bowled for 0 – to leave Glamorgan 6-2.

Any thought of a Glamorgan capitulation were checked, however, with Will Bragg and Marcus North guiding the visitors to Lunch with no further wickets; Glamorgan 40-2.

25 minutes after the resumption of play saw Derbyshire’s next breakthrough, North caught Martin Guptill at slip of the bowling of Wes Durston for 21.

Yet Glamorgan continued to dig in until they were no longer in arrears; Bragg the main instigator and passing 50 in the process.

Hopes of building a defendable lead were dashed however as Ben Wright became Wainwright’s first victim of the innings, caught Durston at slip for 17; Glamorgan leading by four.

The task looked all the more hopeless moments later when Bragg, who had played well for his 78, was caught at the wicket off Durston; Glamorgan 123-5.

Again a mini partnership ensued, this time between Mark Wallace (29) and James Allenby(16), however when both fell in quick succession to the spin of Wainwright a Derbyshire victory inside three days was looking increasingly likely.

Huw Waters dismissal - bowled for a golden duck by Wainwright – was promptly followed by that of Dean Cosker (13) who suffered the same fate, this time to Durston, to see Glamorgan on the brink.

It was fittingly left to Wainwright to account for Jones, caught at cover by Madsen for one, to give the slow left arm bowler his fifth wicket of the innings; Glamorgan all out 188 meaning that Derbyshire would require 70 runs to win.

For Derbyshire, Wainwright secured figures of 5-51 with Durston (3-43) and Groenewald (2-38) both making important contributions.

The opening pair of Guptill and Paul Borrington set about the target briskly, Guptill racing on to 30 from just 23 balls including four fours and a six before falling to the bowling of Mike Reed but not before Derbyshire had already chased down 51 of the required 70 to win.

Wayne Madsen’s innings was a short one, trapped LBW to the same bowling for two, leaving Borrington (21*) and Durston (3*) to see the side home, the former hitting the winning runs as Derbyshire won by eight wickets; collecting 23 points in the process.

Derbyshire remain top of the LV=County Championship Division Two table and now have a day’s rest before travelling to Headingley Carnegie for their Clydesdale Bank 40 match against Yorkshire Carnegie on Sunday.
