Derbyshire all-rounder Wes Durston says the Falcons are in determined mood ahead of Friday’s Friends Life t20 local derby versus Nottinghamshire at the County Ground, Derby (7pm start).
Durston, whose all-round heroics in the victory over Lancashire on Sunday propelled him to the top of the FTI Most Valuable Player Rankings for the whole of county cricket, says only a win will do.
He said: “Playing against Nottinghamshire is always a big occasion, but it’s taken a whole new importance since I joined Derbyshire.
“I don’t think we’ve beaten them in the two years I’ve been at the club so I’m keen to put that right; and it’s a scalp our supporters would particularly value with them being our neighbours.”
Although Durston acknowledges this season’s campaign in the shortest format hasn’t gone to plan, he believes the importance of getting a positive result this Friday is no less diminished.
“We are duty bound to get a result this Friday,” Durston continued. “The fans demand it and we, as professionals, demand it of ourselves.
“We need to get back some of the momentum back we had throughout April and May.
“Doing the double over Lancashire - and hopefully getting a win on Friday in-front of a good crowd - will give us all a boost going into the Chesterfield Festival and the remainder of the campaign.
“They’re a formidable outfit and guys like Alex Hales and Samit Patel who have recently represented England are going to pose a huge test.
“But it’s a great occasion for us to challenge ourselves against a team who have consistently impressed in Twenty20 cricket, as well as providing us with the opportunity to give our supporters something to cheer.”
