Madsen steers Derbyshire home

Wayne MadsenA captain’s hand from Wayne Madsen saw Derbyshire to victory as Sussex Sharks were finally beaten in Clydesdale Bank 40 Group C at the County Ground tonight.

The Falcons’ skipper notched an unbeaten 64, sharing a fourth wicket stand of 96 with Dan Redfern and guiding his side to their third victory in four recent limited-overs matches.

Chasing 168 to win, the Falcons began their repost disastrously as Usman Khawaja was run out, off the first delivery of the innings, without facing a ball.

Chesney Hughes (11) quickly followed as the Falcons slumped to 26-2 before Wes Durston’s lively knock of 30 got them moving towards the total.

Durston was strangled down the leg-side by Chris Liddle at 55-3 in the 14th over, only for Madsen and Redfern to pick up the baton with an assured partnership which won it at a canter for Karl Krikken’s men.

Madsen launched Monty Panesar for a straight six on his way to a fifty, his first of the season in one-day cricket, off 87 balls with two fours.

Redfern, meanwhile, reached a season’s best 49 off 60 balls before perishing stumped to the bowling of Chris Nash with just 17 more required for victory with a full six overs still remaining.

The winning runs arrived with 14 deliveries to go as Madsen crisply drove Nash through the covers for four. The Derbyshire captain finished 64 not out, off 103 balls, striking three fours and a six.

The Falcons had earlier produced an accomplished performance in the field with Tim Groenewald leading the attack impressively on his way to figures of 3 for 32.

Wes Durston took two wickets, Alex Hughes and David Wainwright maintained an impressive economy rate and there were two run outs as the visitors never got away despite 30 from Nash, 40 from Murray Goodwin and 35 from Kirk Wernars.

Inside Edge – “We were really pumped for the game because we wanted to show the supporters what we can do in one day cricket. It was a good win against a good team.” Wayne Madsen
