First team emerge with credit v South Africa; Second XI win

AB de VilliersDerbyshire versus South Africa will recommence at 11am tomorrow after South Africa scored 365-4 on Day 1 at the County Ground.

AB de Villiers (pictured) top-scored for the tourists with 97 off 96 balls before Derbyshire closed the day 75-1 in their first innings.

Ali Evans enjoyed an early moment to remember trapping Jacques Rudolph lbw for 15. Hashim Amla scored 40 off 42 balls before he was clean bowled by Ross Whiteley.

De Villiers produced the knock of the day, however, and the South African wicketkeeper/batsman added 157 for the third wicket with JP Duminy, who made 69 before falling caught and bowled to David Wainwright.

Derbyshire batted 22 overs before the close, losing Matt Lineker for 14 early-on before Wayne Madsen (20*) and Usman Khawaja (36*) saw them safely through to the close.

Mark Footitt, meanwhile, who took 0 for 68 from 14 overs today, was the star of a comprehensive victory for the Second XI over Scotland A which concluded yesterday.

The rapid left-armer’s first innings figures of 5-22 paved the way for a ten-wicket success over the Saltires who were bowled out for 227 and 156 in the match.

Footitt’s match analysis amounted to 8 for 56 while Matt Higginbottom chipped in impressively with game figures of 5 for 65.

Derbyshire’s first innings total of 380 included contributions from Paul Borrington (45), Tom Hamilton (54), Tom Poynton (51), Hamza Siddique (40), Chris Durham (37) and Peter Burgoyne (44).
