Derbyshire are ten points clear at the top of the LV= County Championship table after an enthralling opening day versus Northamptonshire at Wantage Road.
David Wainwright (pictured) and Tony Palladino each bagged a brace of wickets to secure the first bowling point for Karl Krikken’s men as the hosts closed on 331-6.
Rob Newton’s 115 formed the backbone of an impressive Northamptonshire batting display which also included handy contributions of 41 from Niall O’Brien, 37 from Alex Wakely and an unbeaten 50 from one-time Derbyshire loan target James Middlebrook.
A spirited Leicestershire performance at Grace Road, however, prevented second placed Hampshire from cashing-in on Newton’s heroics as Derbyshire remain in poll position at the top of the Second Division table; the Foxes recovering from 43-3 early on to close 334-8.
Quick wickets in the morning and a full complement of batting points are the order of the day for Wayne Madsen and the team tomorrow as the race for promotion continues.
Inside Edge from opening bowler Tony Palladino: “It was a hard day’s work for all the lads. The wicket wasn’t really offering much, but we stuck to our task well and ended the day pretty even.
“Hopefully we can have a tight morning at them and pick up the last four poles, then get a good score on the board ourselves.”
