Burgoyne and Slater dominate in Zimbabwe

burgoynebattingPeter Burgoyne (pictured) and Ben Slater have been piling on the runs in their maiden first-class appearances for the Southern Rocks in Zimbabwe.

Both have been plying their trade in the Zimbabwean domestic competition since the start of October, and the flashes of brilliance both showed during the limited-overs fixtures have been well and truly eclipsed by the performances of both on days 1 and 2 of their first four day contest.

Slater, opening the batting against the Mashonoland Eagles, made 89 in an innings that included nine boundaries, struck all over the billiard table outfield of the Harare Sports Club.

When Slater was finally dismissed in the 70th over as the fourth man out, it meant Burgoyne came to the crease; and the Denby born all-rounder showed no signs of nerves on his first class debut.

Burgoyne’s innings lasted over five hours with the burly all-rounder ending unbeaten on 102 after sharing in a fifth-wicket stand of 153 with wicket keeper Mutumbami.

The Rocks’ innings was eventually declared on 459 for 8 and - at the end of day two - they had the Eagles 15 for 1. With heavy rain forecast for much of day three, they might have to settle for a draw.
