Wes Durston believes Monday’s three-day friendly with Somerset will act as the perfect benchmark as the side continue their pre-season preparations.
The Derbyshire squad returned from their pre-season tour in Barbados last weekend and have since been hard at work preparing for their first friendly of the year at Taunton on April 1st.
The Taunton-born all-rounder insists Monday’s fixture against a strong Somerset outfit will stand them in good stead ahead of the new campaign, as Derbyshire prepare for life back in the LV= County Championship Division One.
“Obviously coming back from Barbados to this weather has been a bit of a shock, but we are looking forward to going down to Taunton for the three-day friendly,” Durston said.
“I was down there last weekend and the weather was better than what it was here. It won’t be great and it will still be cold, but we are looking forward to continuing our preparation for the new season, and it continues on Monday against Somerset.
“We will be up against a side that have been in Division One for a number of years, and they have finished at the right end of the table for a few seasons now. We know that it will be a good challenge and it will set us up well for the start of the season as they have got a good squad with many recognised players.
“Everyone has done well during pre-season and we are looking forward to doing well in 2013. We know that it will be a tough season, but we don’t fear anyone and we are looking forward to playing some cricket on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday – and hopefully getting a positive result.
“Last year we managed to come out on top of the pile after the last game, and this is where we want to be again, in the top half of Division One.
“We are under no illusions that it is going to be hard work, but I don’t think teams will want to play us as we are an unknown factor. I don’t think teams and oppositions thought that we were going to win the league last season and we did, so hopefully we can take that forward into 2013.”
Derbyshire’s three-day friendly with Somerset will begin at 10:30am on Monday, April 1st. Squad: Madsen, Godleman, Durston, Hughes, Redfern, Whiteley, Poynton, Johnson, Wainwright, Clare, Palladino, Turner, Groenewald.
