Hughes signs new contract

ChesneyHughesChesney Hughes has signed a new two-and-a-half-year contract committing the all-rounder to the Club until September 2015.

The left-handed batsman has scored over 1,500 runs in 27 first-class matches since joining the Club in 2009, compiling four centuries since completing first three-figure score in 2010 against Gloucestershire at the age of 19.

Hughes has been a mainstay of the Falcons’ one-day side since making his debut against Warwickshire in 2009, demonstrating the ability to change matches with either bat or ball in both limited-overs formats.

The 22-year-old was in fine form during the recent pre-season tour of Barbados, picking up five wickets in three games and scoring an unbeaten 109 in the opening fixture versus Northamptonshire.

Hughes said: “I am delighted to have signed a new contract with the Club. I believe my ambitions match those of the Club as together we look to build on the success from 2012 and towards a bright future.

“I am really looking forward to the new campaign. There is a positive vibe around the whole Club and we as players are raring to get the season started. I am hoping to have a positive impact with both bat and ball, and I have been working particularly hard on my bowling over the winter in Antigua.

"We had a really good tour of Barbados and it was good to get some wickets and to score the century against Northants, and now I hope to take this forward into the new season.

“We know it will be a challenging season, but I think we have the depth and quality in the squad to compete with the other First Division sides and I am confident we can enjoy a successful run in the one-day competitions.”

Head Coach Karl Krikken said: “We are delighted to have secured this deal that will keep Chesney at the Club until 2015. He is a talented young all-rounder, with the ability to contribute in all formats and he will play a key role in the Club’s future.

“I have been impressed with Chesney’s development since he joined the Club in 2009, and we believe he can have an impact with both bat and ball as Derbyshire continue to look towards a prosperous future.”
