Somerset v Derbyshire: Day Three Report

RedfernSomerset claimed victory by an innings and 27 runs, as Derbyshire were dismissed for 214 on the final day of their three-day friendly at Taunton.

After losing there early wickets, Chesney Hughes and Dan Redfern begun the Falcons’ revival prior to lunch but the visitors succumbed after the interval and were all out just before tea.

On the morning of the third and final day, Somerset declared on 470-5 in reply to Derbyshire’s 229 all out who trailed the hosts by 241 at the start of their second innings.

The Falcons lost two early wickets before the visitors lost their third wicket in the 25th over as Wes Durston was trapped lbw for 28 with the score on 53. But Hughes and Redfern held firm to take the scores onto 88-3 at lunch.

Shortly after the restart, Derbyshire lost Hughes for 37 as he was the fourth batsman to be trapped in front with the total on 117-4. Redfern battled on but fell eight runs short of his half-century as he was caught behind off Steve Kirby for 42, as the Somerset paceman picked up his fourth wicket.

Wickets continued to fall in the afternoon session, despite a spirited 22 from Tom Poynton and 27 from Ross Whiteley, as Derbyshire were reduced to 203-9 just before tea.

Players agreed to take the extra half-hour before the evening interval and the hosts claimed the final wicket just before tea to seal an innings and 27-run victory lead at Taunton.
