Derbyshire’s 1870 Business Club to welcome legends for lunch

National Cricket Selector Geoff Miller and former England batsman Mike Gatting have been confirmed as guest speakers for the Derbyshire County Cricket Club 1870 Business Club lunches in 2013.

Miller, who was born in Chesterfield, played 254 first-class matches for Derbyshire between 1973 and 1990 and was an integral member of the 1981 NatWest Trophy winning side.

He will provide the lunch time entertainment on Day 2 of the LV= County Championship fixture versus Nottinghamshire on Thursday 25th April.

Miller also enjoyed a prolonged and fruitful spell in the England side during the 1970s and 1980s. The all-rounder claimed 85 international wickets and notoriously pouched the winning catch during the Boxing Day Test at the MCG to give England a famous three-run victory in 1982.

Following his retirement from the professional game in the early 1990s, Miller has gone on to enjoy great success as a member of the ECB national selection panel. Since 2008 he has been the head selector, overseeing England’s rise to number one in both the Test and 50-over formats, as well as becoming World T20 champions in the Caribbean in 2010.

Miller’s blend of anecdotes and humour - and his appreciation of the Derbyshire vs Nottinghamshire rivalry - promise to provide a great backdrop to the big match.

Mike Gatting’s career with Middlesex spanned nearly 25 years during which he earned 79 Test caps for England, 23 as captain, scoring ten centuries. He will close the 1870 Business Club Programme on Day 2 versus Warwickshire on Wednesday 25th September.

Gatting played in the legendary 1981 Headingley Test match and was a member of the victorious 1986/87 Ashes touring party - the last England team to win the urn prior to Michael Vaughan’s side in 2005.

He scored over 35,000 runs during his first-class career which came to a close in 1998 and has since acted as President of The Lord’s Taverners and served as an MCC Committee member.

Now Managing Director for Cricket Partnerships at the England & Wales Cricket Board, Gatting is leading the development of the recreational game nationwide. He will provide a fitting end to the campaign by combining memorable stories from the past with knowledge of the modern day grassroots game.

As well as the lunch events to open and close the season, the 1870 Business Club will convene for afternoon tea on Day 2 of each home LV= County Championship match during the 2013 season (Friday 21st June versus Somerset, Day 1, is the one exception); providing a relaxed and informal forum were representatives of local businesses can meet and enjoy the cricket.

Derbyshire Chief Executive Simon Storey said: “Both our 1870 Business Club lunch guests have enjoyed long and illustrious careers on both sides of the boundary rope. As we bring local business people together over a relaxed and informal lunch, they will be entertained and informed by illuminating insights into the lives and minds of two hugely successful cricketing leaders.”
