As we countdown to the first LV= CC fixture at the County Ground against Nottinghamshire on April 24th, we look at some of the iconic images from Derbyshire’s triumphant 2012 campaign. Today is Madsen and Poynton – August 23rd, v Northamptonshire. .
Captain Wayne Madsen and wicketkeeper Tom Poynton leave the field at Wantage Road after producing a record-breaking unbeaten ninth-wicket stand of 259 at the end of Day 3 against Northamptonshire.
Madsen batted throughout the day and completed his highest first-class score of 223 off 384 balls, including 31 fours in an incredible knock that helped elevate Derbyshire from 253-8 to 512-8 at the close of play.
Partner Poynton also passed three figures, completing his maiden first-class century finishing the day unbeaten on 105 from 209 deliveries.
But the pair would fall 22 runs short of the world record ninth-wicket stand as Poynton was bowled by Jack Brooks for 106 on Day 4. Their 261-run association was however the third highest ninth-wicket stand in the history of first-class cricket and Madsen eventually finished unbeaten on 231 from 400 balls.
The incredible stand set the tone for the final weeks of the 2012 campaign as Derbyshire left Northamptonshire with a valuable draw and remained top of Division Two entering the final month.
