Middlesex complete nine-wicket win at Lord's

Lord'sDerbyshire secured a 16-run first innings lead after dismissing Middlesex for 215, but five wickets from Tim Murtagh helped bowl out the visitors for just 60 as Middlesex claimed a nine-wicket victory on Day 3 at Lord’s.

The Derbyshire bowlers bowled superbly on the third morning, as Mark Turner (3-51) and Jonathan Clare (4-40) claimed two wickets apiece to restrict the hosts to 215.

But Karl Krikken’s side never got going with the bat, losing wickets at regular intervals to be dismissed for just 60, as Toby Roland-Jones completed a hat-trick to leave Shivnarine Chanderpaul unbeaten on 18 after 35 overs.

Tony Palladino claimed the early wicket of Sam Robson, but Joe Denly (44*) and Chris Rogers (28*) saw the hosts to their 77-run target in 21.4 overs.

Middlesex resumed overnight on 180-6 and Gareth Berg and Ollie Rayner (26) quickly moved the hosts past 200, before the latter was trapped lbw by Turner who claimed his second wicket of the match.

Turner (3-51) claimed his third soon after as he spectacularly bowled new batsman Toby Roland-Jones for 5, to reduce Middlesex to 211-8.

Clare (4-40) joined the attack and claimed two wickets in his second over of the morning. He first removed Tim Murtagh who was caught at mid-wicket by Godleman for 5, and with his very next delivery he trapped Steven Finn in front without scoring to dismiss Middlesex for 215, trailing by 16 runs.

Billy Godleman couldn’t repeat his first innings heroics, however, as he was dismissed by Murtagh for three in Derbyshire’s third over. And Murtagh claimed his second wicket shortly after as he removed Wes Durston lbw for one to reduce Derbyshire to 7-2 after 7 overs.

Wayne Madsen began the Derbyshire recovery hitting Steven Finn into the grandstand for six, but he was caught behind from the very next delivery, giving the England paceman his first wicket of the innings to reduce the visitors to 20-3 at lunch.

Derbyshire continued to struggle with the bat after the restart, losing three quick wickets all from the bowling of Murtagh who claimed his fifth wicket after removing Jonathan Clare with the scores on 26-6.

Chanderpaul (18*) and Poynton (10) would get the scoreboard moving completing a 31-run stand, before Poynton was caught behind by Simpson off the bowling of Finn to reduce the visitors to 57-7.

Derbyshire would only add three more runs to the total before Toby Roland-Jones produced an inspired spell of bowling to complete a hat-trick, removing Tony Palladino, Tim Groenewald and Turner to dismiss Karl Krikken’s men for 60 – their lowest first class total against Middlesex.

Derbyshire made the perfect start as Palladino removed Sam Robson without scoring to reduce Middlesex to 4-1, but Denly (44*) and former Rogers (28*) guided the hosts to a nine-wicket victory at Lord's.
