Derbyshire 2nd XI claimed a convincing five-wicket victory in their 3-Day friendly against a Surrey and Hampshire combined XI at Belper this week.
Mark Footitt produces an inspired spell of bowling claiming 6-71 from 22 overs to dismiss the combined side for 242 in their second innings, setting Derbyshire 182 for victory in 72 overs.
Chesney Hughes and Paul Borrington both hit 45 in reply and a quick-fire 29 from Peter Burgoyne ensured that the hosts reached their target to complete an excellent five-wicket win.
The visitors won the toss and elected to bat first at Belper, but three wickets from Matt Higginbottom (3-41) and two apiece from Harding (2-20) and Alasdair Evans (2-50) dismissed the Surrey/Hampshire side for 194 in 49.5 overs.
Derbyshire had 52 overs still to bat on the opening day and the hosts closed on 159-4 thanks to 63 from all-rounder Hughes.
The hosts continued to pile on the runs on the second day with Burgoyne hitting a superb 44 to help Derbyshire post 255 in their first innings, a lead of 61 runs.
Surrey/Hampshire compiled a second innings lead, but it would have been considerably higher if it wasn’t for the superb spell from Footitt who picked up his best figures of the season finishing with 6-71 from his 22 overs.
Derbyshire set about their 182 target with both Hughes (45) and Borrington (45) completing healthy knocks to move the hosts past three figures.
With rain in the air, it was left to 19-year-old Burgoyne to get Derbyshire over the finish line and his excellent 29 from just 34 balls ensured the hosts would reach their target with 18 overs to spare, finishing the innings on 184-5.
The Derbyshire 2nd XI are back in action in two weeks, against Lancashire at Belper in their first Championship fixture of the season on Wednesday 8th May to Friday 10th May.
