Jack Brooks’ inspired spell of bowling helped Yorkshire claim an innings and 39-run victory at Headingley on Day 4 of their LV= County Championship Division One fixture.
The hosts declared on 677-7 after an hour’s play this morning, securing a 202 run lead. Wayne Madsen (52) and Wes Durston (50) both reached half centuries in reply, but five wickets from Brooks and two apiece from Rashid and Plunkett condemned Derbyshire to defeat in Leeds.
Yorkshire resumed Day 4 on 597-5, a lead of 122 runs, and they quickly built on their advantage in the morning session moving onto 613-6 within two overs after the restart.
Derbyshire would fightback, however, making two earlier breakthroughs removing both Gary Ballance (53) and Tim Bresnan (14) to reduce Yorkshire to 643-7. But Adil Rashid (36*) and Liam Plunkett (21*) continued the onslaught before the hosts finally declared on 677-7 after an hour’s play, securing a lead of 202 runs.
The Derbyshire replay got off to a difficult start as Billy Godleman was trapped in front by a good inswinger from England all-rounder Bresnan.
Chesney Hughes and Madsen would begin the visitors’ reply moving the score onto 43 before the hosts claimed their second wicket, that of the in-form Hughes who was dismissed for the first time in the match for 15.
And things got worse for Derbyshire soon after as Shivnarine Chanderpaul was caught behind by Jonny Bairstow off Plunkett for just four, as the visitors entered Lunch on 47-3, still trailing by 155 runs.
Madsen would find a reliable partner in Durston, as together they moved the scores past 100 as the pair both reached their half centuries. But the stand, which was worth 92 runs, was broken shortly after as Durston was caught at square-leg by Phil Jaques off Brooks for 50.
And just like just before Lunch, Derbyshire lost quick wickets as Madsen fell for 52 and Wainwright was bowled by Rashid to leave the visitors 157-6 at Tea.
Brooks claimed his third and fourth wickets of the innings straight after Tea, removing Dan Redfern and Tom Poynton in successive deliveries, as Derbyshire slumped to 157-8 after 50 overs.
And the hosts claimed an innings and 39 run victory shortly after, as Groenewald was bowled by Rashid before Brooks claimed his fifth wicket to remove an injured Palladino to dismiss Derbyshire for 163.
