Wes Durston and Ben Slater both completed centuries as part of a 198-run stand as Derbyshire – who claimed three late wickets – ended the opening day on top against Durham MCCU at the County Ground.
Durston hit 15 fours and a six in his 117, outscoring 21-year-old Slater by a single run who also retired during the afternoon session on 116 – as the hosts declared on 436-7, thanks to a late 73 from Alex Hughes.
Alasdair Evans, Jonathan Clare and Peter Burgoyne picked up a wicket apiece after the restart, as the visitors closed on 40-3 after 11 overs, trailing by 396 runs.
After losing the toss and being asked to bat first, Billy Godleman and Paul Borrington made a solid start putting on 71 runs for the opening wicket.
Borrington, however, was first to fall for 22, before partner Godleman followed soon after for a brisk 49 from just 44 balls – both to the impressive Matt Milnes who finished with figures of 2-92 from 25 overs. But these would be the only breakthroughs of the morning, as Slater and Durston produced an outstanding partnership to end the session.
After a slow start, the duo quickly increased the run rate, finding the rope through both the on and off side. Durston was first to reach three figures from just 115 balls shortly after the lunch interval, as the hard hitting all-rounder retired unbeaten on 117.
Slater soon followed his Captain, completing his century from 188 balls - including 10 fours - before retiring on 116 at the tea interval.
At the start of the final session, the hosts lost Tom Poynton for 13 from 14 balls, but Alex Hughes maintained the momentum going at just over a run a ball on the way to a quick-fire half century.
Jonathan Clare (28*) joined the 21-year-old and together they shared a 74-run partnership inside 12 overs, before Hughes was finally out for 73 from 83 balls, as Derbyshire declared on 436-7.
The hosts managed to claim three wickets in the final 45 minutes of the day. Evans bowled Chris Jones for eight, Clare removed Ivo Hobson for 10, before Burgoyne bowled Shah for 12 with the last delivery of the day - as Durham MCCU closed on 40-3, trailing by 396 runs.
