Durham MCCU fightback in vain as Derbyshire claim victory

DerbyDurham MCCU produced an impressive batting display on the final day – but it was ultimately in vain as Derbyshire dismissed the visitors with 10 overs remaining to seal a 65-run victory at the County Ground.

Rishabh Shah, Chaitanya Bishnoi and Chris Purshouse all completed half-centuries, as the visitors moved towards their 432 victory target on day three.

But Durham MCCU lost wickets at crucial times throughout the day and three wickets from Wes Durston and two from Alex Hughes ensured the visitors fell 65 runs short, as Derbyshire claimed victory in an entertaining three-day fixture.

Durham MCCU began the final day on 28-1, after Alasdair Evans claimed the late wicket of Chris Jones with his third delivery of the innings the evening before.

Ivo Hobson and Shah rotated the strike nicely throughout the morning session - completing a 110-run stand for the second wicket - before Peter Burgoyne finally found the breakthrough removing Shah for 57 from 105 balls, including five fours.

The hosts claimed a second wicket shortly before the lunch interval, as Hobson was trapped lbw by Hughes for 41 from 105 balls to reduce Durham MCCU to 112-3 at the break.

The visitors continued their impressive batting display after the restart, as Chaitanya Bishnoi and Luke Patel shared a 94-run partnership to move the university side onto 208-3, before both fell in quick succession.

Bishnoi was caught by Jonathan Clare off Durston for 68 from 110 balls and in the following over Patel was run out by Dan Redfern for 23.

Durham MCCU resumed the final session on 273-5, adding another 92 runs for the sixth wicket before 19-year-old Ollie Steele was caught and bowled by Clare for 36.

Two wickets fell in succession shortly after as Purshouse was bowled by Hughes for 53 from 75 balls, before first innings centurion Freddie van den Bergh was removed by Higginbottom for 7, to leave the visitors on 336-8.

Still requiring 96 runs for victory, Nat Watkins and Matt Milnes continued to play their shots in an attempt to force a result, but 21-year-old Watkins was caught by Tom Poynton off Durston for 31 – leaving the visitors needed 75 runs with just the one wicket in hand.

And the final wicket was claimed with 10 overs remaining in the day, as Charlie Wallis was caught in the deep by Hughes off Durston for three to dismiss Durham MCCU for 366 - and hand Derbyshire victory by 65 runs.
