Palladino strikes on rain-shortened day

TonyPalladinoFour wickets for Tony Palladino destroyed the Somerset middle-order and kept Derbyshire in the hunt on Day 2 at the County Ground.

The 29-year-old added figures of 4 for 75 to his priceless knock of 49, as Somerset closed a rain-shortened day on 180-6 in reply to Derbyshire's 266 all out.

Marcus Trescothick notched a subdued half-century for the visitors who initially cruised to 101-1, before Palladino (pictured during his opening day 49) and Tim Groenewald (2 for 16) combined to ensure an excellent afternoon session for Karl Krikken’s men.

Overnight batsman Nick Compton was the subject of national media speculation on the morning of Day 2 regarding his place at the top of the England order ahead of the Ashes.

The opener’s chances of responding positively were ended shortly after a mid-morning rain interval as Wes Durston held a low catch at first slip to hand Palladino the first of his wickets.

Trescothick, meanwhile, received a life on 35 when Richard Johnson parried behind the stumps, before taking a rain-induced early lunch at 44 not out with Somerset 79-1.

The former England left-hander reached 50 in 110 balls, with nine fours, before nicking Groenewald to slip with no further addition to his score.

Since Derbyshire’s late-April defeat to Yorkshire at Headingley Carnegie, they had been without the services of Palladino, who had taken 50 plus wickets in each of the previous two seasons.

Returning from a side strain, Palladino produced the kind of afternoon spell that characterised his contribution to the 2012 promotion campaign.

He added the scalps of Dean Elgar (26), Craig Kieswetter (7) and James Hildreth (36) to that of Compton – and Groenewald dislodged Alex Barrow for good measure – as Somerset plummeted from 101-1 to 166-6.

Only three evening session overs were then possible, during which Peter Trego was dropped in the slips on his way to 14 not out. Craig Meschede is unbeaten on one.
