Local youngster set for fairy-tale Queen’s Park appearance

benslaterLocal boy Ben Slater is set to play for Derbyshire – on his home patch – as Derbyshire face Yorkshire at Chesterfield starting tomorrow (Wednesday), 11am.

The 21-year-old, who has played club cricket at Queen’s Park since Kwik Cricket at the age of seven, comes into the squad alongside Peter Burgoyne after the pair both topped 150 against Northamptonshire last week.

“I am really excited about the prospect,” Slater said.

“Playing at your home ground and scoring a few runs is what dreams are made of. Hopefully I can get that opportunity this week.

“The fixtures with Yorkshire are always great games. Chesterfield is almost on the border of Yorkshire and they always bring a few supporters to the Festival.

“We are expecting a good crowd with good support for both teams and it’s setup to be an exciting game.

“When first-class cricket returned to Chesterfield back in 2006, there was a massive increase in the number of members and junior members at Chesterfield Cricket Club – and the festival also helps bring lots of people to the Chesterfield area.

“It’s not only great for local cricket fans, but it also has a positive impact on the community and businesses in the area.”

Councillor Amanda Serjeant, Chesterfield Borough Council’s Executive Member for Leisure, Culture and Tourism, said: “It will be great for Chesterfield residents to see Ben – who is one of their own - playing a match in the town.

“One of the reasons that we help fund the cricket festival is that we want to inspire young people to take up sporting activities as part of our commitment to improve the health and well-being of local residents.

“Every year local school children get a chance to meet the players and receive some coaching and hopefully seeing Ben on the pitch will inspire them to follow in his footsteps.”

The Derbyshire 14 man squad in full is as follows: Chesney Hughes, Ben Slater, Wayne Madsen (Captain), Wes Durston, Dan Redfern, Richard Johnson, Peter Burgoyne, Tom Poynton, Jonathan Clare, Greg Cork, Tim Groenewald, Mark Footitt, Mark Turner, Tom Knight.

Shivnarine Chanderpaul misses out with a hamstring injury sustained in the Friends Life t20 match versus Lancashire.

Yorkshire squad: Moin Ashraf, Gary  Ballance, Jack Brooks, Andrew Gale (Captain), Andrew Hodd, Phil Jaques, Alex Lees, Adam  Lyth, Steven Patterson, Liam Plunkett, Azeem Rafiq, Adil Rashid, Ryan Sidebottom.

Five days of cricket remain in the Hill Dickinson Chesterfield Festival of Cricket – in association with Chesterfield Borough Council - following a bumper attendance at the opening Friends Life t20 fixture on Sunday and a successful Chesterfield Turns Pink Charity Twenty20 yesterday evening.
