After yesterday’s final-ball agony against Surrey, Karl Krikken’s side will be looking to bounce back against Lancashire Lightning at Old Trafford tomorrow night (3.40pm start).
Derbyshire hit their highest ever List A total against Surrey, with Chesney Hughes (80) and Paul Borrington (72) leading the way with a record-breaking second-wicket stand to help the Falcons post 294-9. But some powerful hitting from Arun Harinath (52), Zander de Bruyn (60) and Gary Wilson (80) helped the hosts claim victory off the final ball of the match.
Hughes admits it was a disappointing defeat, but believes the side can take plenty of positives into Tuesday’s Yorkshire Bank 40 fixture against Lancashire.
“It’s unfortunate that we lost there because I thought we played a lot of good cricket, but the long and short of it is that Surrey played very well,” Hughes said.
“It wasn’t easy to score freely and you had to capitalise on the bad balls and I think me and Boz did that well. We set the team up for a big total, although I thought we could have got 15 or 20 runs more.
“But I thought we played well so we can’t be too down-hearted and now we look forward to tomorrow’s game with Lancashire where we hope to get our 40-over campaign back on track.”
Lancashire are currently one place and two points above the Falcons going into tomorrow’s clash, and victory for Derbyshire could move them ahead of their Group B counterparts.
Glen Chapple’s side include a host of experience internationals including former Derbyshire Captain Simon Katich and South African Ashwell Prince, while ex-Falcon Wayne White may also feature in the Red Rose County’s matchday squad.
Derbyshire squad to face Lancashire in full is as follows:
