[VIDEO] Delighted Derbyshire claim second straight four-day win

DerbyDerbyshire claimed their second consecutive LV= County Championship Division One victory and move out of the bottom two after thrilling 56-run win against Middlesex at the County Ground.

Mark Footitt claimed two wickets within three balls as the hosts enjoyed a tremendous morning session picking up five wickets to leave the visitors on 121-7 at the break, in pursuit of their 297 run victory target.

Gareth Berg and Ollie Rayner, however, shared an 85-run stand to frustrate the hosts, but a wicket apiece from Footitt (4-65), Matt Higginbottom (1-40) and Peter Burgoyne (3-66) sealed a famous victory at Derby.

Derbyshire now move above both Somerset and Surrey into seventh place in the Division One table.

Peter Burgoyne said: "It's been a fantastic team performance. We are now no longer in the relegation zone and everyone is over the moon. There were a few nerves at one stage, but everyone stayed calm enough and the result came at the end.

"It's now good to see that we have gone above of Surrey and Somerset, and we are now looking forward to the next two Championship games against them both."

Middlesex began the final day on 25-2, after Footitt and Tim Groenewald (2-48) removed Joe Denly (4) and night-watchman Steven Finn (0) respectively the previous evening.

But Sam Robson and Adam Voges - who shared a 50-run third-wicket stand - made the hosts wait over 45 minutes for the first breakthrough on Day Four. Groenewald, who left the field late the previous day due to injury, entered the attack to clean bowl the dangerous Robson for 29.

England’s Eoin Morgan was the new man in, but he only lasted 17 balls before he dragged a Footitt delivery onto his stumps for nine. Neil Dexter (2) was sent back two balls later as the left-arm paceman emphatically removed the Middlesex’s Captain’s middle stump, reducing the visitors to 85-5.

Voges, however, was still there rotating the strike nicely with new partner John Simpson. But Peter Burgoyne returned to the attack to remove the Australian international for 48, before Simpson was caught by Wayne Madsen at extra cover off the final delivery before lunch to reduce Middlesex to 121-7, still requiring 176 runs for victory.

Gareth Berg and Ollie Rayner produced an outstanding eight-wicket stand worth 85 runs to frustrate the hosts at the start of the afternoon session. The excellent partnership was finally broken by Matt Higginbottom after Berg was well-caught by Chesney Hughes at slip for a superb 77.

Still requiring 91 runs to win, Rayner and Toby Roland-Jones shared another stubborn stand, this time adding 30 runs. But the pace of Footitt removed Roland-Jones, thanks to a smart catch down the leg side from Tom Poynton.

And it wasn’t long before Burgoyne found the edge of Tim Murtagh who was comfortably held by Chesney Hughes, his third catch of the innings, to spark wild celebrations amongst the Derbyshire fielder.
