Division Six cricket minnows gatecrash the party of telecoms giant

BuyMobilesThe UK's No.1 online mobile phone retailer celebrated its 10-year anniversary at Pride Park last week – but why was a Belper Meadows Cricket Club shirt standing proudly over the celebrations?

As well as toasting the mind-blowing success of their company, & A1 Comms bosses were also celebrating their support of cricket in Derbyshire from grassroots through to the professional game.

Building on their Derby County Football Club shirt sponsorship, the Alfreton based telecoms giant secured all-year-round publicity through televised national sport by sponsoring the Derbyshire CCC Twenty20 jerseys in 2013.

By supporting Belper Meadows CC, the multi-million-pound company have also been able to support cricket as far down the pyramid as Division 6 North of the Derbyshire County League.

While the partnership with the county club helped secure the landmark signing of Shivnarine Chanderpaul, Belper’s young cricketers have been provided with branded playing kit and community coaching thanks to investments from Comms.

Chief Executive Paul Sisson said: “We’re proud of our association with cricket in Derbyshire and that our investment is making a difference to the game at both professional and grassroots level.

“It has been great to watch Derbyshire compete on the big stage on SKY Sports this season. But we have equally taken pride in helping Belper Meadows Cricket Club build from grassroots upwards in the recreational game.

“This demonstrates that - although our brand is national – we remain true to our local roots in Derbyshire and committed to supporting our local community.”

Representatives of Cricket Derbyshire - including fast-bowler Mark Turner, batsman Dan Redfern and Chief Executive Simon Storey – were in attendance at the party along with Phil Hudson, Dan Martin and Nicolle Horton from Belper Meadows Cricket Club.
