Tom Poynton is urging supporters to get behind the team as they give one final push in an attempt to secure Division One cricket for next season.
Karl Krikken’s men enter their last game of the 2013 campaign against Warwickshire - starting on Tuesday 24th September; 10.30am start - knowing only a victory will give them a chance of remaining in the top flight for 2014.
Derbyshire currently sit in eighth place in Division One; 15 points behind Nottinghamshire and 16 adrift of Somerset who themselves go head-to-head next week. A win for either side at Trent Bridge could leave the door open for Wayne Madsen's side, only if they claim victory against Warwickshire at Derby.
Poynton, however, is confident that Derbyshire can avoid the drop and is calling for supporters to get to the ground and get behind their side.
“We have been keeping an eye on other fixtures, but we are just concentrating on our final fixture with Warwickshire next week,” he said.
“There are still quite a few possible outcomes, but we don’t get too bogged down with the math. We are just focused on getting the result at Derby - and there is no reason why we can’t do that and stay up.
“It's a massive fixture. Hopefully we can get a big crowd and get, as ever, some good support behind us.
“It’s always nice when we play at home and to have the crowd on our side. To be at home can also be an advantage as we know the conditions well.
"We will now continue our preparations over the weekend and make sure we are all fully prepared for the visit of Warwickshire. And hopefully we can get the win we need.”
Wicketkeeper Poynton believes securing Division One survival would be a massive achievement for everyone involved with the Club.
“It would be huge,” he added. “Everyone in the town has the same goal and that is to see to best cricket played in Derbyshire next year.
“The lads definitely want to be in Division One. We want to see more big name players like Ricky Ponting and Stuart Broad at the County Ground next year - and that would be good for the town as a whole.
“So come down and support us in our final push.”
