Graeme Welch says the two-day friendly against Warwickshire will be a good exercise to see exactly where the squad are at ahead of the new season.
Derbyshire conclude their preparations for the 2014 season with a two-day fixture against the 2012 LV= County Champions starting on Thursday 27th March at the 3aaa County Ground; 11am start.
The game will be Derbyshire's final warm-up fixture before the new season begins with a three-day first-class match against Durham MCCU on Tuesday 1st April; also at the 3aaa County Ground.
Entry to both fixtures are FREE as supporters get a chance to see the squad on home soil for the first time in 2014.
Elite Performance Director Welch says this week's friendly against his old Club will give him and his coaching team a chance to see where his side are at ahead of their first LV= County Championship campaign match against Leicestershire at Grace Road on Sunday 6th April.
“This final warm-up fixture against Warwickshire will be a good exercise to see exactly where we are prior to our opening Championship fixture with Leicestershire," he said.
“It will be good for the squad to get out in the middle at the 3aaa County Ground and compete against a strong side. It will be an opportunity for both our batsmen and bowlers to spend some valuable time at the crease as we continue to build towards the start of the new season.
"We have raised the intensity in training since arriving back from Abu Dhabi. The lads have been outside working hard as they all compete for their place in the side for that opening Championship game.
"But we're not just gearing up for Leicestershire; we are gearing up for that three-day game against Durham University. That's only a few days before the first Championship game, so it will be a key match and we will be prepared for that.
"The beauty of it for me is that most of the squad could play first-team cricket. Everybody contributed on tour at some stage. The squad looks strong.
"It's now a blank sheet of paper and this week's friendly is another chance for players to perform. Whoever performs will play at Leicestershire, it's as simple as that."
Derbyshire will face Leicestershire at Grace Road for their opening 2014 LV= County Championship Division Two fixture on Sunday 6th April; 11am start.
