Derbyshire maintained their winning start to pre-season with a six-wicket win over Worcestershire in a Twenty20 fixture in Abu Dhabi.
Scott Elstone bowled an inspired spell of bowling, claiming four wickets, to turn the tide after Worcestershire had made a good start. Elstone was ably assisted by Tom Knight and Tony Palladino as Daryl Mitchell’s side posted 126-9 from their 20 overs.
Derbyshire cruised to their victory target with relative ease, with Chesney Hughes top-scoring with 48 off 35 balls and Elstone adding 29 to make it two wins out of two for Graeme Welch's men.
Worcestershire made a quick start after winning the toss and electing to bat first. Tom Kohler-Cadmore (38) and Daryl Mitchell (37) shared a 79-run opening stand inside the opening 10 overs, before new recruit Scott Elstone - bowling his first over for the county – dismissed both batsmen in successive balls.
Elstone was the pick of the bowlers, completing his four-over spell with impressive figures of 4-15, as Derbyshire turned the screw in the last 10 overs.
Worcestershire slumped from 79 without loss to 126-9 after 20 overs thanks to the spin quartet of Knight, Elstone, Wes Durston (0-23 off four) and Hughes (0-18 off two) – who was bowling in a match for the first time since last April.
Knight (3-26 off four) picked up three wickets, while Tony Palladino (2-20 off three) claimed two late wickets to complete a good turnaround.
Derbyshire suffered an early set-back in reply as Paul Borrington (4) was trapped lbw by Harrison, but Hughes and Durston regrouped to add 54 in six overs for the second wicket.
Durston was second out for 13, but Hughes continued his explosive innings hitting six fours to end with 48 off 35 balls and move his side into a strong position at 85-3 in the 12th over.
Elstone and Madsen then moved Derbyshire serenely towards their target and, despite the loss of Elstone for 29 off 28 balls, Welch’s side claimed victory with five balls to spare.
