Graeme Welch says the squad are in good shape as they prepare for their first-class fixture against Durham MCCU at the 3aaa County Ground; starting Tuesday.
Elite Performance Director Welch was speaking after Derbyshire’s two-day friendly with Warwickshire in which his side produced a dominant display against his former Club.
Billy Godleman (100 retired), Wayne Madsen (63 not out) and Stephen Moore (50) all gained valuable time in the middle, while Mark Turner put a frustrating pre-season behind him by claiming six wickets in the match.
Welch says this week’s match against Durham MCCU is now the next step in the squad’s progression as they build towards the opening LV= County Championship fixture of the season at Leicestershire on April 6th.
“The fixture with Durham MCCU is the next progression,” Welch said.
“It’s classed as a first-class fixture so we are going to play it as close to a Championship match as possible and that’s what we will expect from the lads.
“When we got back from Abu Dhabi we said this is the process we are going to go through to ensure we peak for the start of the season against Leicestershire.
“It’s all gone to plan so far and we hope we can just carry this through to the start of the season.
“It’s difficult trying to recreate a first-class game in a friendly match. But we have stuck to the processes we have put in place and that’s really pleasing.
“We always thought we were in a decent place but we never know until we get out in the middle and play games.
“I’m really happy with how preparations have gone and where we are as a team at the moment.”
Welch was pleased with Derbyshire’s performance against Warwickshire citing the valuable time his batsmen gained in the middle.
“It was a good display,” he added. “Stephen Moore batted really well and Billy Godleman continued his good pre-season tour. The Captain, meanwhile, got some valuable time at the crease so we are well on the way.
“That’s Billy’s second century in pre-season after he got a ton in the inter-squad match - so let’s hope he’s not wasting all these runs. But he’s got into a good routine and mentally he’s in a very good place.”
