Despite a half-century for Marcus North, Nottinghamshire Outlaws claimed a five-wicket win in the NatWest T20 Blast fixture at The 3aaa County Ground.
North top-scored with 57 as Derbyshire posted 164-7 off their 20 overs, but a blistering 63 from Alex Hales guided the Outlaws to victory.
It was a difficult start for the Falcons, who slipped to 23-3 after 4.3 overs in the face of some good bowling from Harry Gurney (2-24) and Andy Carter (2-42).
But Captain Wayne Madsen led from the front hitting 36 off 27 balls (3 fours, 1 six) as he sparked the Derbyshire fightback. He was ably assisted by North who, when Madsen fell, carried the mantle to top score with 57 off 47 balls (6 fours).
Scott Elstone chipped in with 17 off 10 balls to help move the hosts to 139-6 in the 18th over. Signal a late onslaught from Tim Groenewald who hit 19 off just 7 balls (3 fours, 1 six) to help his side reach a competitive 164-7.
England’s opening Twenty20 pair Alex Hales and Michael Lumb got the Outlaws off to a flyer adding 57 runs in just 4.2 overs. Lumb was first out for 21 off 15 balls (3 fours, 1 six), and this was the start of a fruitful period for the hosts.
Including the wicket of Lumb, Derbyshire claimed three quick scalps courtesy of Mark Footitt (2-33) and Tim Groenewald (2-38), with Nottinghamshire 76-3.
But the visitors were always comfortably ahead of the required run-rate, led by a superb innings from Hales – 63 off 32 balls (11 fours, 1 six) – as Nottinghamshire reached their victory target in the 17th over with five wickets in hand.
