Wayne Madsen hit 65 off just 40 balls, but Worcestershire Rapids claimed a narrow eight-run win in a thrilling NatWest T20 Blast clash at The 3aaa County Ground.
A blistering 65 off just 37 balls from Man of the Match Colin Munro and 68 from Captain Daryl Mitchell guided the Rapids to 177-5 off their 20 overs
Madsen replied with a quick-fire half-century, while Marcus North added 38, but the Falcons fell eight runs short on 169-8.
Wes Durston got Derbyshire off to the perfect start after winning the toss and electing to bowl first. He bowled Richard Oliver (0) with the third ball of the innings, opening the match with a wicket-maiden.
Tom Kohler-Cadmore fell shortly after, caught by Matt Higginbottom, who was making his Twenty20 debut, at short fine-leg off Tony Palladino (1-28) with the Rapids 21-2 after four overs.
This, however, brought Munro to the middle and alongside skipper Mitchell added 98 in 9.5 overs to put their side in the ascendancy.
New Zealand international Munro hit 65 off just 37 balls (9 fours, 2 sixes), while Mitchell carried his bat to end unbeaten on 68 off 51 balls (5 fours, 2 sixes) as Worcestershire posted a competitive 177-5 off their 20 overs. Mark Turner was the pick of the bowlers with figures of 2-34 off his four overs.
Stephen Moore (32 off 25 balls) and Durston (16) got the Falcons off to a solid start in reply, moving to 29-0 in the fourth over, but the hosts lost a flurry of wickets to fall to 52-3 in the sixth over.
North and Madsen responded adding 75 in eight over as Derbyshire moved within touching distance on 160-4 in the 19th over. But both fell in the final stages as Derbyshire fell agonisingly short on 169-8.
