David Wainwright (pictured above) and Mark Footitt have expressed their sadness after witnessing a fatal crash on the M1 yesterday as they made their way to the match against Leicestershire.
The game at Grace Road was delayed by an hour after the remainder of the Derbyshire squad were caught up in the subsequent traffic jam.
Wainwright said: “We feel so bad for the woman and her family. It puts a game of cricket into perspective when you have seen something as horrific as that."
Chief Executive Simon Storey added: “We are deeply saddened that the accident proved to be fatal and proud of the two players for the way they responded to a very difficult situation.
“The fact that Mark and David were then able to refocus on cricket is testament to their professionalism and we’ll support them appropriately.
“We are only too aware of the impacts of such tragic events and would like to express our condolences to all those affected, whilst wishing well in their recovery those involved that were injured.”
