Cricket Derbyshire to launch BTEC Sport Academy in 2015

BTECSportAcademyCricket Derbyshire and Derby College are working in partnership to create the inaugural Cricket Derbyshire Sport Academy, launching in September 2015.

With UCAS points up for grabs, the Cricket Derbyshire Sport Academy is the perfect way for cricket enthusiasts, aged 16 to 19, to bridge the gap between school education and university.

It will offer young people in Derbyshire of all abilities - who are interested in sport, cricket events and coaching - the opportunity to gain higher education qualifications and to enhance employment opportunities.

Cricket Derbyshire Director of Partnerships, Ryan Duckett said: “The Cricket Derbyshire BTEC Sport Academy is an exciting new venture designed to develop cricket talent within Derbyshire, both as recreational players and coaches.

“Players, both male and female, will get the opportunity to sample the life of modern day professional cricketers by using the excellent facilities at The 3aaa County Ground and will receive a top quality education through Derby College.

“Applicants will have the best of both worlds; training in Derby College’s state of the art facilities and taking practical lessons with professional, qualified ECB coaches as well as guest sessions from Derbyshire County Cricket Club’s Elite Performance Coaches and first team squad members.”

Derby College Head of Employer Engagement, April Hayhurst added: “The BTEC Sport Academy is a great way for young people to develop their skills and enhance their employment opportunities in the sports industry.

“Participation in cricket is increasing across Derbyshire and there is demand for new talented coaches.

“We hope this course will help meet this demand and provide young people with an opportunity to realise their ambition whilst developing key skills for employment.”

Derbyshire Cricket Board’s Head of Recreational Cricket, Andy Bowley said: "This is another fantastic opportunity to develop cricket in Derbyshire. It will ultimately lead to better players improving the standards of cricket and more coaches supporting and improving players throughout our cricketing community."

The Cricket Derbyshire BTEC Sport Academy will launch in September and is available to young adults aged 16 to 19.  As well as providing possible routes into employment, the BTEC programme can also provide opportunities to progress into higher education/university degree courses.
