BTEC Cricket course an exciting new option for post-16 education

BTECSportAcademyYoungsters aged 16-19 can apply today to be enrolled on the inaugural Cricket Derbyshire Sport Academy for the new term, starting in September 2015. 

The new course, delivered in partnership between Cricket Derbyshire and Derby College, provides a robust education option for teenagers with an interest in cricket.

The course will include opportunities to use Derbyshire County Cricket Club’s elite training facilities – and receive coaching and training sessions from professional Cricket Derbyshire coaches.

Delivery will include:

·         Technical and tactical coaching.

·         Psychological, physiological and lifestyle management.

·         Additional cricket related coaching or officiating qualifications.

·         Health and fitness programme.

The development of playing skills and coaching is the key aspect of the programme, which will enable a clear route through to higher level study such as University, or possible employment opportunities within sport.

Entry requirement for this Level 3 Extended Diploma in Performance and Excellence is five GCSEs and A* to C (including English and Maths).

Applications for the Academy are currently being taken, with the first course commencing in September 2014.

Cricket Derbyshire Director of Partnerships, Ryan Duckett said: “The Cricket Derbyshire BTEC Sport Academy is an exciting new venture designed to develop cricket talent within Derbyshire, both as recreational players and coaches.

“Players, both male and female, will get the opportunity to sample the life of modern day professional cricketers by using the excellent facilities at The 3aaa County Ground, whilst also receiving a top quality education through Derby College.  

“Applicants will have the best of both worlds; training in Derby College’s state of the art facilities and taking practical lessons with professional ECB coaches as well as guest sessions from Derbyshire County Cricket Club’s Elite Performance Coaches and first team squad members.”

Derby College Head of Employer Engagement, April Hayhurst added: “The BTEC Sport Academy is a great way for young people to develop their skills and enhance employment opportunities in the sports industry. 

“Participation in cricket is increasing across Derbyshire and there is demand for new talented coaches.

“We hope this course will help meet this demand and provide young people with an opportunity to realise their ambition whilst developing key skills for employment.”

Derbyshire Cricket Board’s Head of Recreational Cricket, Andy Bowley said: "This is another fantastic opportunity to develop cricket in Derbyshire.

“It will ultimately lead to better players improving the standards of cricket and more coaches supporting the improvement of players throughout our cricketing community."
