Welch focuses on Lancashire showdown

GraemeWelchGraeme Welch says Derbyshire are playing good cricket and are therefore in confident mood ahead of the Royal London One-Day Cup clash versus Lancashire at The 3aaa County Ground today (Thursday); 2pm start.

Derbyshire sit second in Group A, a point behind early leaders Gloucestershire, after securing victories in their opening two fixtures – against Hampshire and Leicestershire – before rain prevented hopes of making it three from three last Thursday away at Worcestershire.

"We were bitterly disappointed," Welch said speaking after the no result at New Road.

"We played some good cricket again and restricted them to probably 10-15 under par on a decent wicket. We thought the wicket was worse than it was but the lads said it was actually a good pitch.

"I would have fancied us chasing that down.

"We said before the game we owed Worcestershire one because they beat us twice in the t20 and in the Championship, when we weren't playing our best cricket. We have come here and we were the better team on the day.

"We've given three points away already, with the points deduction and the game here but we are unbeaten and playing good cricket."

There are eight group matches in this stage of the 50-over competition, with the top four going through to the quarter-finals. Derbyshire are currently the only unbeaten side in their group.

Their next match is at home to Lancashire Lightning today at The 3aaa County Ground (2pm start).

"I think the lads needed a few days off because June and July were that hectic," said Welch.

"A lot of the seamers, especially, were near breaking point, so we needed to look after them and give them some days off.

"We have been able to de-brief after the last two games, which we weren't really able to do in the t20 because you are travelling and playing so much.

"We have more opportunity to prepare for this competition and the lads are doing brilliantly."

As well as the usual full price tickets (adults £17, juniors £5) for the match, Derbyshire are offering 'Run Chase Tickets' at only £10 for adults and £2 for juniors after 5.30pm, so supporters can enjoy the run chase at a discounted rate.
