Worcestershire 2nd XI dominate on Day Two

Worcestershire took firm control of the 2nd XI Championship match on Day Two at The County Ground, amassing 505-7 declared in response to Derbyshire's 299; an innings that saw Matt Lineker score 145.

Resuming 77-1, the morning began well for the hosts with Jack Manuel clean bowled by Mark Turner in the second over of the day without adding to his overnight score.

From that moment on however, Derbyshire were made to toil, Worcestershire going on to amass 505-7 declared to build a daunting first innings lead.

There were contributions all the way down for the visitors, with Netherlands international Alexei Kervezee (156), Shaaiq Choudhry (101*) and Brett D'Oliveiera (70) the main protagonists.

There were wickets for Tom Knight (2), Matt Higginbottom (2) and Mark Turner (1).

Facing a tricky seven over spell before the close, Derbyshire lost the in-form Lineker in the final over of the day, clean bowled for six, the hosts closing 15-1 and facing a tough battle to bat out the final day for a draw.

Entry to the final day at The County Ground is free of charge to spectators.

On Day One, Matt Lineker’s impressive form continued, the opener hitting 145 on the opening day of Derbyshire’s 2nd XI Championship match at home to Worcestershire at The County Ground.

Having won the toss and elected to bat first, Lineker contributed to a 110 run opening partnership with Chesney Hughes; the latter the first to be dismissed, run out for 36.

Derbyshire’s strong opening to the game continued however, with Garry Park joining Lineker at the crease; the pair 70 for the second wicket before Park fell for 29.

With the first two sessions of the game concluded, the hosts were handily placed at 277-5, however the eventual dismissal of Lineker, out for an impressive 145, the hosts collapsed, losing their remaining five wickets for just 22 runs; Derbyshire all out for 299.

For Worcestershire, Brett D’Olivera – grandson of former England all-rounder Basil D’Olivera – excelled, claiming figures of 7-54 with his leg spin.

With 19 overs remaining in the day, Worcestershire reached 77-1 at the close, with Jack Manuel unbeaten on 55.
