ECB rewards Derbyshire with New Zealand Test warm-up in 2013

Martin Guptill will make his farewell County Ground appearance this coming Bank Holiday Monday versus Warwickshire but, less than a year later, he is likely to return to the County Ground,  this time to open the batting against Derbyshire for New Zealand.

Derbyshire will host the touring Black Caps for a three day fixture on Saturday 4th, Sunday 5th and Monday 6th May 2013.

It is the Club’s third tourist fixture in four years versus top international opposition and the ECB’s decision to award such a high profile fixture to the county reflects Derbyshire's increasing standing within English cricket. It follows the visit of Australia in 2010 and the forthcoming match versus South Africa on Friday 10th and Saturday 11th August this year.

New Zealand, who played a World Cup fixture versus Pakistan at the County Ground in 1999, will use the match as preparation for the Investec Test Series versus England.

Derbyshire Head Coach Karl Krikken said: “Facing more international opposition in 2013 will provide another great opportunity for our players to test themselves versus some of the world’s top players.

“It will be a major challenge in particular for our bowlers to control Martin who has been a fantastic overseas player for us both last season and this time around. It will be great to see him back in Derbyshire.”

Chairman Chris Grant added: “It is always an honour to host international opposition and I’m looking forward to welcoming their exciting young team for the match next year, as we are about welcoming Australia A and  South Africa later this summer.

“The return of Martin to Derbyshire will create an added buzz for the fixture when May 2013 arrives - and there are entertainers aplenty elsewhere in the New Zealand side also. It promises to be a real treat for our members, supporters and corporate customers.”

The Falcons v the Bears this Bank Holiday Monday is Guptill’s farewell home appearance and the Club has taken steps to ensure a memorable occasion for all the family, featuring Jubilee celebrations, kids’ entertainment and autograph signing at the conclusion of the match.

The Clydesdale Bank 40 competition remains wide open with the overall prize of a Lord’s final for two counties at the end of the Clydesdale Bank 40 campaign.
